9/7/10-Here's what we talked about ths morning:

9/3/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • A man in Washington State was treated for an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound to his left buttock.  He was on a hike and moved his gun from his holster to his back pocket to see if that would be more comfortable.  Apparently, it was not.
  • Jamie Oliver hosted a reality show last spring where he went to Huntington, West Virgina and tried to change the eating habits of students at the local high school.  ABC has renewed "Food Revolution" for a second go round, this time in LA.  It will air next spring.
  • I never thought that watching two people over eighty having a conversation on TV would interest me, but you can bet that I'll be checking out Betty White's upcoming appearance on "Inside the Actor's Studio."  It should air sometime near the end of this month.  I can't wait for James Lipton to ask her what her favorite swear word is.

9/2/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

9/1/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • Ah, marketing.  The science of spelling product names funny just to sell you something.  Check out these food products spelled wrong on purpose.
  • The summer TV season is concluding with many series either ending or down to their last one or two episodes.  The big winner this summer is TNT with "Rizzoli and Isles" leading the way.  Also having good summers are "Jersey Shore" and "True Blood."  Many of the USA shows have struggled this summer including "White Collar" "Psych" and my favorite summer show "Burn Notice."  USA has had a a breakout hit with "Covert Affairs."
  • Susie from St. Nicholas Hospital told us that their 29 foot motor home, "The Health Express" will be at the Sheboygan County Fair all weekend screening blood pressure and blood sugar.  They will also be selling bicycle helmets.

8/31/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • If you are a customer of Time Warner Cable, you will be happy to know that they and Disney have resolved their issues and have signed a new deal.  Had the two parties not agreed to a new agreement, Time Warner customers would have temporarily lost the Disney channels as well as ESPN.  With college football cranking up Thursday night, this would not have been a good thing for either party.
  • Dancing with the Stars has announced their new cast.  This show is turning into "where people whose fifteen minutes are up go to die."
  • This morning, we talked to the Sheboygan County Fair's Fairest of the Fair Brianna Wimmler. Find out more about the fair here.

8/30/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

8/27/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

8/26/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • A family from New Jersey was having their picture taken in Madison when someone stole their bag containing their wallet, credit cards and ID.  Fortunately, the thief was clearly shown doing the deed in the picture.  They showed it to the cops who recognized the thief and picked him up.  The thief claims the bag was abandoned.
  • The Philadelphia Cupcake Lady, who sells cupcakes from a retired postal vehicle had her truck apprehended...by the cops.  She claims it was the licenses and inspections people and the cops say it was the parking division.  No matter, she recovered the truck for $200 and plans on taking it to the streets again soon.
  • The backpack you choose for your child goes a long way to determining whether or not they will have back problems later in life.  Here are some quick tips on how to choose the right one.
  • WEB BONUS MATERIAL: For what it's worth (and it sure isn't worth much) today marks my 31st year in broadcasting.  And they said I wouldn't last!

8/25/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • Pope Benedict is in for a treat on his upcoming trip to Scotland in September.  The Pope will be entertained by none other than Susan Boyle.  It's good to be Pope.
  • Most of us know that when we eat in a restaurant, a proper tip is somewhere between fifteen and twenty percent (Princess and I usually tip twenty if the meal and the service are good.) But have you ever wondered how what the correct tip for the pizza delivery guy, the sky cap or your hair stylist is?  Wonder no more.
  • Dr. Michelle Roiger from St. Nicholas Hospital talked to us about foot ulcers, a serious condition among diabetics.

8/24/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • More people are watching TV when they want to watch it.  In a recent survey, over 40 percent of Americans have watched a show using "on demand" or their DVR.  For those of you who get up early like I do, you know those 9pm programs (and sometimes the 8pm ones) are very difficult to watch live.  The other great thing about having a DVR (we own two) is you can record two shows at the same time so you can eventually watch both of them.  In fact, during the summer, there are six shows I tape on Tuesday night.  If you want to guess which ones they are, send me an e-mail with your guess.
  • Triple A Auto reports less teens are texting while driving.  This is great news.  Now if we could only get the adults to stop texting while driving.  And talking on the phone in the check out line.
  • Ever send an e-mail you wish you hadn't sent?   G-Mail can take care of that.

8/23/10-WEB BONUS MATERIAL-You know how some people yell at the TV during sporting events?  I found myself yelling at the TV during a cooking show today.  There was a woman preparing a dish which started off with her sweating onions in a skillet (cooking them down).  EVERY SHOW on the Food Network from Giada to Rachael to Sandra Lee tells you when you sweat onions to add some Kosher Salt to draw the moisture out of the onions (which is very important) and to season the onions.  As Emeril says "I don't know where you get your onions, but where I get mine they don't come seasoned."  Apparently they don't do it that way on PBS.  And, for some reason, I was moved to yell at the woman on TV "add some salt!  Where's the salt?  It will taste like crap if you don't add salt, lady!  Geeze lady, you're killing me."  I have either drank too much Food Network kool-aid or need a vacation.

8/23/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • It's an Emmy for Betty White!  In an effort to speed up the Primetime Emmy show (which will air live Sunday night on NBC) several Emmys are given out in a ceremony prior to the big event.  Betty White has won her sixth career award, this one for hosting Saturday Night Live in May.
  • Ever wonder what's really in that prop note a TV actor is reading?  in an episode of "Leave It To Beaver", Ward Cleaver received a note from The Beav's principal which cited Beaver for bad behavior.  Here is the actual contents.
  • Economic times are tough for everyone, including big money CEO's, some of whom have had to take a pay cut.  Don't weep for them too hard, I'm sure they'll all make their yacht payments just fine.

8/21/10-WEB EXCLUSIVE MATERIAL: Boy, did I get annoyed today.  I went to get one lousy item at an office supply store and unfortunately got stuck behind a woman purchasing $286 worth of items.  If that wasn't bad enough, the woman got a cell phone call in the middle of checking out.  Please, if someone calls you in the checkout line, don't answer it unless someone you know is on death watch.  Or better yet,do what I do and leave your cell phone in the car!

8/20/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • I've become pretty annoyed with Internet search engines lately.  In order to find web sites, you have to wade through the pages that people pay Google or Yahoo to see, rather than finding one at the top of the list that will actually help you.  And now, some of those pages may bring you some real grief.  Searching for Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts or Jessica Biel could put you in contact with pages that will put a virus in your computer.
  • If you went to the Wisconsin State Fair, you probably enjoyed the food.  Here's some other state fair food that other states are featuring. Just looking at this list makes my cholesterol go up.
  • A new British study suggests that listening to sports on your car radio is as dangerous as drunk driving.  That's because people get so into the games they forget they are driving a car. Funny, I don't recall ball games being on at 4am.
8/19/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • Good Grief! ABC has renewed their agreement to play Charlie Brown specials for the next five years.  This is great news for all of us who grew up with Charlie Brown and want to share it with our kids and (in some cases) grand kids.  The agreement did cost ABC a lot of money, including a huge raise for Lucy who claimed she was sick of working for Peanuts.
  • A man was ticketed by Saukville police after losing his cool in a grocery store checkout line.  The woman in front of him got permission from the cashier to check out, even though it was the ten items or less line and even though she had a lot more than ten items.  When the woman asked the seething man behind her if he had an issue, he said "Yes, your ugly and fat!"  He continued to bother the woman until police were called and was fined $429 dollars.  The moral of the story?  Don't think out loud.
  • New York City is now the home of the first Pop Tars cafe.
8/18/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • An Illinois town wants to ban eye rolling and enforce a penalty on doing it to someone in public.  If I lived there, they'd probably give me the electric chair.
  • As if driving a car in traffic isn't difficult enough, a man in the Milwaukee suburb of Brookfield was pulled over for changing his clothes while driving.  Police warned the man about indecent exposure and let him off with a slap on the...um, wrist.
  • There's a new family practice clinic opening September 7th in Plymouth and this morning Dr. Jeff Corrigan joined us for a few minutes to tell us about what they will offer.

8/17/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

8/16/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

8/13/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

8/12/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

8/11/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • A woman visiting Epcot Center in Florida claims a Disney employee groped her.  The employees name?  Donald Duck.  Good thing for him that Daisey Duck runs HR.
  • Former Jet Blue flight attendant Steven Slater is out of the crossbar Hilton after posting $2,500 bail.
  • Corynn from St. Nicholas Hospital told us that reducing the size of your child's backpack will help reduce the chances of back and shoulder injuries later in life.

8/10/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • A woman called police to tell them a man had broken into her house.  The police found him...he was asleep on her couch...naked
  • A Jet Blue steward lost it when a woman got up early from her seat to get her luggage out of the overhead bin, then swore at him as he tried to get her to sit back down.  The steaming Stew grabbed the microphone, cussed out the passengers, grabbed some beers and his luggage and departed the plane via the emergency exit slide.  Police arrested him later that day.  In my book, the guy's a hero and instead of going to jail, they should throw him a parade.
  • What are the best cookbooks to have around?  Try "The Joy of Cooking" or any of these books.  I still have my 1976 edition Betty Crocker cookbook complete with dogeared pages and post its sticking out marking recipies.

8/9/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

8/6/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:8/5/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • You may not be familiar with the name Morrie Yohai, but you most likely have sampled his greatest invention. Morrie, you see, invented cheese doodles in 1965.  They can't be too unhealthy as Morrie lived until 90.
  • What's the most popular car among car thieves?  The Cadillac Escalade, of course.  The Chevy Silverado is second while the Dodge Charger is third.  My car is so low on the list, thieves leave me notes on my windshield saying "if you drive this car, you make less money than us!  Good luck, pal!"
  • It's Project Days at Menard's.  Our buddy Jason, the manager of the Menard's in Manitowoc, dropped by to talk about the savings
8/4/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • Want some truffles in your salad but don't know where to get them?  The Safeway Grocery store in Washington, DC has white truffles for sale.  Make sure you bring a credit card with a big balance because they run $999.99 a pound.  That's not a typo.
  • This year's Wisconsin State Fair features more than cream puffs.  The Machine Shed Restaurant of Pewaukee will be selling Krispy Kreme cheeseburgers at the fair which begins tomorrow.  That's right, kids.  It's a cheeseburger served on two Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
  • Sarah from the Sheboygan Surgery Center joined us this morning to tell us about the services they offer. Here's how to find out more.
8/3/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:8/2/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:7/30/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • A new study says that 43% of people who lose their jobs fall out of touch with close friends due to the sense of shame that unemployment brings upon them.  Here's some free advice from someone who has been there a couple of times (I work in broadcasting, remember?) First, don't depend on people from your former place of employment to be around for you.  Most of them will distance themselves from you simply because they are still there and you aren't and you are of no use to them anymore. Second, this is a good time to renew acquaintances with old friends as some might provide information on where to look for a new job.  Class dismissed.
  • Wanting to buy something cool but cost prohibitive.  Here's how to talk yourself out of it.
  • Two pen pals who have been writing each other since 1951 finally got to meet for the first time
7/29/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:
  • A popular Australian tourist attraction that offers tours in several languages has added a new one: Klingon.  I'm holding out for the Pig Latin tour as I am fluent in Pig Latin.
  • We've told you about the $1,000 pizza.  Now meet the $69 hot dog.
  • Outgoing BP exec Tony Hayward will receive a pension of $1,000,000 a year despite the fact he botched the oil leak situation in the gulf.  Don't we wish we all had jobs where we could cost our companies billions of dollars, yet be rewarded for it.
7/28/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:7/27/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:7/26/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

7/25/10-Thanks to all of the nice people out in St. Nazianz yesteday making us feel welcome at the charity softball game to benifit the Savannah's Pay It Forward Foundation. The Valders Fire Department beat a scrappy Calumet County Dive and Rescue Squad 9-4.  After the game, SPIFF presented a check for $6,000 to the Calumet County Dive and Rescue Team. Here's more info about SPIFF.

7/23/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

  • The rain really caused some issues all over South Central and South Eastern Wisconsin yesterday.  Most people in our area came up okay, but in Milwaukee, especially on the Northeast and Southeast sides, not so much.  Mitchell Airport got so much rain, they've closed until mid morning Friday and the Brewers game may be in jeopardy because of flooding on Miller Park Way.  There was even a twenty-foot sinkhole that swallowed an SUV!  With more rain on the way this weekend, the best rule is to call ahead or monitor internet reports to see where the trouble spots are and the best way to avoid them.
  • Simon Cowell is being sued by a former contestant on "Britain's Got Talent" for $3.8 million for exploitation, humiliation, degradation, and barbarism.  I thought that's what the guy does.
  • This weekend is the 2nd Annual SPIFF Olympics to benefit Savannah's Pay It forward Foundation.  The money raised this weekend will assist several local schools and charitable organizations.  Here's a complete schedule of events.  If you attend the softball game Sunday at 4pm, you might hear a familiar voice doing PA.  And no, I don't mean Chris Logan!

                          • What gets served at a state dinner?  All kinds of things you never heard of like Oregon Wagyu Beef in Oaxacan Black Mole with Black Bean Tamalon and Grilled Green Beans and Herb Green Ceviche of Hawaiian Opah with sesame-Cilantro Crackers.  You'd think with the economy being what it is, the Obamas could have just called Jimmy John's.
                          • Last night on "American Idol" it was so long Casey.  That leaves Lee and Crystal to fight it out for the championship.

5/15/10-We spent a couple of hours at Menard's today talking about their "Made in the USA" sale.  Thanks to Joe and the crew for being great hosts and for all the people who came by to get some Mt. Olympus Tickets.

5/13/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:5/12/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:
                          • Proof again that what you see on TV isn't necessarily true: Five TV stations in Missouri in Wisconsin were tricked into putting a "yo yo champion" on the air.  He wasn't.
                          • Last night on "Dancing With the Stars", it was Reno 911's Nicey Nash's turn to hit the bricks.
                          • If you are concerned about your cholesterol, St. Nicholas Hospital will be having a screening on May 18.  Get more info here.
5/11/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:
                          • Could fame be getting to Susan Boyle?  She's suing her two brothers for invasion of privacy after they publicly commented on the state of her health.  She certainly is no longer the sweet, unassuming person Britain fell in love with.
                          • If you are helping plan college for your kids, here are some majors to steer them toward if you expect them to take care of you in your twilight years.  By the way, radio communications is not on this list.  You are on your own Mom and Dad!
                          • St. Nicholas Hospital will be at Road America selling and fitting bicycle helmets for kids entered in the Big Wheel races.  For more info, check out their website.

                          • Are there fast food products worse for you than the new 540 calorie KFC "Double Down?" You betcha.
                          • Last night on "Dancing With The Stars", America got it's wish.
                          • It's National Volunteer Week and St. Nicholas Hospital is saluting all it's volunteers.  For more information on volunteering at the hospital, visit their website.

                          • Have you heard about the new, "sandwich" at KFC?  It's called the "double down" and is comprised of two pieces of boneless chicken breast (used as bread) two slices of bacon, two slices of cheese and a sauce, which by most reports is similar to peppercorn ranch.  If you are calorie conscious, you can get the grilled instead of the fried chicken as your "bread."  Reviews have been mixed and some have tried to save the six bucks by making it at home.  I haven't tried one yet and probably won't.  Then again, I'm the make it at home type anyway.
                          • Last night on "Dancing With The Stars"., soap opera star Aiden Turner was given his walking papers.
                          • Recently, my wife Princess had neck surgery to correct three crushed vertebrae in her neck.  As part of her recovery, she worked with occupational therapists who helped her regain her ability to do simple tasks like put her shoes and socks on and walk without the use of a walker or cane.  They did a great job with her. In honor of National Occupational Therapy month, St. Nicholas Hospital is honoring their Occupational Therapists and hosting some special programs.  These folks do some great work!

                          • Poor Denard Span.  The Minnesota Twins outfielder invited his mom to watch him play at a spring training game.  Span led off the game fouling a ball off and wait for it...hitting his mother.  If I were Denard, I'd be in Vegas right now, because the odds of that happening are pretty slim.
                          • Didi Be, nami is the latest "American Idol" contestant to be told to hit the bricks.
                          • Activists want McDonald's to fire Ronald McDonald because they believe he entices youngsters to eat fast food.  McDonald's has told them they have no plans to retire Ronald.

3/27/10-Princess and I watched "The Blind Side" tonight.  It's a great family movie.  I thought Princess was going to lose it when Sandra Bullock's character said "Who died and made him Bear Bryant?"  Princess is from Alabama and is a huge Alabama football fan!

3/25/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:
                          • In what must have been the easiest arrest in history this side of Alvin Karpas, two bank robbers must have thought their bank had take out service.  They called ahead and told the bank to have a bag of money ready.  Ten minutes later they showed up, only to be greeted by local police.
                          • Last night on "American Idol" Paige hit the bricks.  Ten contestants remain.
                          • Actor Robert Culp has died.  He was part of the groundbreaking 1960's series "I Spy" which paired Culp with a black partner that was his equal.  He was also the gruff FBI agent in "The Greatest American Hero."  Robert Culp was 79.
3/24/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:
                          • Former West Wing star Richard Schiff and Forrest Gump's Robin Wright are heading to Broadway to perform in the play "Talley's Folly".  Schiff, who played the terminally grumpy Toby on WW, has plenty of time on his hands since his TV series "Past Life" was axed by Fox after just three episodes.
                          • Kelly Osbourne has joined the Dr. Phil show as a special consultant.  Dr. Phil says Kelly's past with abuse and weight issues make her a perfect contributor to his show.
                          • Sissy Spacek has been signed by CBS as part of a medical show pilot.
                          • Sometimes, commercials really annoy us.  What are the most annoying commercial spokespeople ever? According to the web site Guyisam.com. these are.
                          • Mary from St. Nicholas Hospital told us that taking 1000mg a day of vitamin D will help your circulation, your heart and perhaps keep diabetes away.  Vitamin D is most commonly found in milk, but you need a whole lot more daily.  A supplement is the best way.  Consult with your doctor first.
                          • CORRECTION: Every once in awhile the facts in my head get scrambled and I remember something incor, rectly.  Yesterday, I mentioned that there were some people that thought the song "Lights" by Journey was geographically inaccurate.  I misspoke (SHOCKING!). The song in question wasn't "Lights", it's "Don't Stop Believing" which talks about a girl "born and raised in South Detroit."  There is no South Detroit and Steve Perry phrased it that way because he said.it flowed better that way in the song.  Thanks to the listener who called and pointed out that "Lights" is actually geographically accurate.  I would promise that this will never happen again, but you and I both know better.

These are tough economic times and to survive you have to be creative.  Take the case of a man in California. He lost his six figure job and his house due to the economy.  He has everything he owns packed in a leased car and uses his air miles to stay in hotels.
                          • It's bad enough in this economy that prices for just about everything are going up.  It's even worse when some of those taxes or user fees we have to pay are totally unnecessary.  Doctors in New York want to tax pizza fifty cents a slice to help pay for heath care for obese people.  Do I get a tax credit for ordering a salad?

She is in New York with a group from her college working at a soup kitchen, but wanted to see how they taped the Today Show.  She told me she shook both Al Roker's and Matt Lauer's hands.  While I am proud of her, I did give her a hard time for not being in front of a computer listening to her father on the radio.  I actually think I heard her roll her eyes at me over the phone.

For Ginger, Jennifer Anniston or Britney Spears.  As the professor, I like Jim Parsons or possibly James Spader.  I'm still thinking about Mary Ann and Gilligan.  Send me your thoughts.

Now that this mystery has been solved, let's all figure out what REALLY happened to Jimmy Hoffa.

                          • A man in Michigan channeled his inner Wyle E. • Mel Gibson is in trouble again.  Talking to Chicago TV reporter Dean Richards, Gibson got upset when pressed with questions about how his past behavior may affect the public's perception of him..  As a sidebar to this story, when I was in high school and wanted to get into radio, Dean Richards not only spent a lot of time on the phone talking to me about it, he invited me down to the radio station (WFYR) for a tour.  Dean is the nicest guy in the world, so my conclusion is that Mel isn't.

It will combine some of the elements of "Emeril Live" (band, cooking) kicked up a notch with celebrity guests.  You can still catch "Emeril Live" weeknights on the Fine Living Network at 6 and 7pm.  With any luck this will be better than the chef's sitcom on NBC which was the biggest bomb on TV since "My Mother the Car."
                        • Tonight is the night.  The final "Tonight Show" with Conan as host. Jay Leno returns March 1. Conan, mean, while is mullin, g his options, , of which there appear to be many.
                        • Tonight on all of the over the air networks and several of the cable channels, it's the "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon which will help raise money for relief in the earthquake ravaged country.  Among those scheduled to appear: Madonna, Beyonce, Denzel Washington, Bruce Springsteen and Geroge Clooney, who set the whole thing up.

                            • In Fon Du Lac, a man was cited after his neighbors claimed he was playing music too loudly.  He was cranking John Denver tunes.  He could be fined up to $210.  Good thing it wasn't Barry Manilow.  That carries an automatic jail sentence.
                            • Jay Leno was gracious last night talking candidly about how we have gotten to the point where we are with the Late Night situation.  Jay also anticipates moving back to 10:35. Conan, for his part, kept twisting the knife.
                            • Glen Bell has passed away at the age of 86.  You may not recognize the name right away, but he is founder of Taco Bell. It was his inovative recipies for taco shells, taco sauce and his drive through concept that made his company the worldwide leader in Mexican fast food and helped make it available to many who had never tried it.

                            • Taylor Swift is planning on writing an autobiography.  Call me old, but I have socks older than her.  My daughter is three months younger than she is and my step-daughter is two months older.  My other step daughter is three years older than she is.  Where I come from, we don't call a 20 year-old's autobiography a book.  We call it a leaflet.
                            • Leno and Conan continue to go at it on late night.  It seems like it is beginning to get personal.  I had a friend tell me that it must be great being able to complain about work on national TV and get paid for it.
                            • Soul singer Teddy Pendergras, s has passed away at 59.  He was the lead singer for "Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes" back in the 70's.  You may also remember that he crashed his Rolls-Royce in Philadelphia in 1982 and was left paralyzed from the waist down. He bravely reutrned to recording a year later.

                            • NBC admits they screwed up moving Jay Leno to prime time, so beginning in February, Leno returns to late night. I'm sure it's not the last time a hasty programming decision will bite someone in the butt.
                            • Art Clo, key has passed away at the age of 88.  While Art's name might not be familiar to you, his work sure is.  Art is the man who brought us Gumby.

1/5/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

                            • It's cold in Wisconsin, but it's also cold down south.  Houston, for example, will reach a low of under twenty degrees for the first time since 1996.  That will make it colder than McMurdo Station in Antarctica.  Al Gore was not available for comment. BTW, nothing is funnier to me than a bunch of southerners in cold weather.  I lived in the south for six years and they thought it was cold when it hit 30.  I freaked them out because I didn't wear a coat until it got down into the teens.  Of course, they laugh at us in the summer when the humidity down there is 145% and the heat index is the temperature of the sun.
                            • A woman in Ohio was so upset that her local McDonalds wouldn't serve her Chicken McNuggets, she punched out the drive through person and then put her fist through the drive-in window.  I feel the same way about Big Macs.
                            • Songstress Susan Boyle is on the hunt for the perfect man.  She describes him as being like Simon Cowell.  George Clooney breathes a sigh of releif.

1/4/10-Here's what we talked about this morning:

1/1/10-Good morning and happy new year!  If you overdid it last night, here are some sure fire breakfasts that will help soothe the flannel on your tongue and the freight train in your head.
